Restorative Approaches
A key feature of all schools in The Gallery Trust is the adoption of Restorative Approaches, and Bloxham Grove Academy endorses the principles of this approach.
The application of Restorative Approaches is a key feature of The Gallery Trust, and this relational practice is embedded at Bloxham Grove Academy. Students are empowered to bring their concerns to adults because they will know that incidents will be addressed through Restorative Approaches. All members of our community (students and adults) are familiar with dealing with issues in a restorative way and instinctively use restorative language and strategies when faced with conflict, bullying or unkind words. Adults are trained in using restorative techniques and they facilitate ‘mend it meetings’ where students voice their feelings, take responsibility for their actions and consider the impact of their actions on others.
The principles of Restorative Approaches are for all members of our community to:
- Listen to others’ opinions, to value them and to understand that everyone will have their own perception of events
- Take responsibility for their actions and to repair any harm that may have been caused
- Identify solutions to issues and to work with others to put these solutions into practice
A strong emphasis on safeguarding, positive behaviour management and the use of restorative language builds resilience amongst students to resist discrimination and enhance awareness of risk. The culture of strong pastoral relationships at Bloxham Grove Academy promotes openness and empowers students to speak without fear.
Embedding Restorative Approaches in our practice inherently develops consideration for others, and acknowledges that everyone has a unique and valued perspective. Students are given time and space to reflect on their actions, and this focus on empathising with others and the development of emotional intelligence is essential in supporting our inclusive ethos as well as helping students with their preparation for adulthood and skills for life.
