Maths
The focus in maths is on numeracy skills and the application of mathematical skills in real life situations.
We recognise that, along with literacy skills, maths is a fundamental and vital life skill. An emphasis in maths lessons is therefore on understanding and applying knowledge about everyday maths such as telling the time, measurement, and using money and electronic banking systems safely.
We are keen for students to gain mastery in maths and therefore we use a bespoke learning programme designed to engage learners and provide them with enjoyable experiences. Students will be prepared with the skills necessary to consider mathematical challenges with an appropriate level of independence, developing confidence in their ability and enabling them to think and solve problems mathematically with relevant skills and knowledge.
We use appropriate resources within our bespoke curriculum such as numicon and STERN maths equipment, for example classroom clocks, where it meets the needs of our learners. We also make use of online resources such as TTRockstar, Whiterose and Google Classroom to provide interactive, individualised and engaging experiences for learners. Practical experiences across the curriculum are also planned within activities such as cooking and technology projects being developed with maths activities in mind, and use of equipment such as weighing scales, tape measures and timers.
Outline planning considers all aspects of mathematics to ensure a robust programme, and we are developing a curriculum that is geared towards functional mathematics and giving learners the opportunity to develop the skills required for further learning, skills for the workplace and independent living skills.
